Habitats
Bogs store more carbon than any other ecosystem in the world. For example, one hectare of bog stores 10 times as much CO₂ as the same area of forest; bogs are therefore of great importance to the global climate and the associated climate change. The following habitat types can be found in the Heidenreichsteiner Moor:
- Damaged high moor
- Transitional and sedge-grass moor
- Pine-birch bog woodland
Alongside climate protection, the conservation of the ‘moor’ habitat forms the basis for the preservation of various animal and plant species and is therefore a top priority. High moors are not characterised by a very high diversity of plants and animals, but rather by a relatively small number of highly specialised species.
