Further development and implementation of the nature park concept

Heidenreichsteiner Moor Nature Park: Structural consolidation, qualitative development and implementation of the nature park concept LE-78-03-NOE-2025-43563

In 2024, the Heidenreichsteiner Moor Nature Park drew up the Nature Park Concept 2030. This forms the basis for the present project and also for the sustainable development of the nature park region.

The project aims to implement the Nature Park Concept 2030, with a focus on moorland conservation, as well as raising awareness, nature education and public relations:

Moorland restoration – thinning measures:
To prevent excessive shading and evaporation, and to improve the habitat for species typical of moorland that form peat, areas of moorland woodland within the nature reserve are gradually being thinned out.

Biodiversity surveys:
Recording and documenting species found in the nature park, with a different focus and varying survey methods each year.

Vegetation mapping:
Vegetation surveys to assess site quality and to record vegetation in various sub-areas of the nature reserve; following the implementation of restoration measures, these surveys are carried out to assess the effectiveness of the measures.

Education:
Expansion and further development in the areas of nature interpretation, education and public outreach

Aims of the project:

Active nature conservation (moor conservation) & research

  • Extensive baseline data on the protected area and its conservation targets have been collected
  • Preservation and improvement of the condition of bog habitats, including their characteristic animal and plant species
  • Ongoing monitoring to assess the success of the implemented restoration measures and to document the development of the sites

Awareness-raising & education

  • The importance of moors and moorland conservation is firmly established amongst the public
  • Awareness of the unique features of our landscape and acceptance of nature (conservation) have been increased by engaging with various target groups. This is achieved, amongst other things, through engaging interactive educational and nature experience programmes (e.g. the ‘Haus des Moores’) as well as through communication and public relations activities across various (digital) media
  • Educational programmes and guided tours are continually being expanded and improved in terms of quality
  • The nature park is established as a competent point of contact for its key topics within the region and beyond
  • Knowledge transfer

Establishing a strong presence in the region

  • Collaborations with partner organisations in various sectors (excursion destinations, nature conservation organisations, educational institutions, etc.) anchor the nature park in the region and create sustainable synergies, whilst existing resources are shared.
  • Integration of the nature park’s objectives into local council decision-making

Nature Park Strategy 2030

The Nature Park Strategy sets out the strategic development of the Nature Park for the coming years and is based on the four pillars of the Nature Park’s philosophy – conservation, education, regional development and recreation. With this strategy document, the nature park not only fulfils its statutory mandate but can also drive forward self-determined, sustainable development in the region. This Nature Park Concept is not intended to be a document that ends up in a drawer, but rather a concrete roadmap for how the Nature Park should develop over the coming years – in line with the vision of the people who live here.
